November KBAY Teacher of the Month

The KBAY Teacher of the Month program is a partnership between 94.5 KBAY FM and the San Jose Education Foundation, the leading education foundation serving students, families and teachers of San Jose.

Like you, we at KBAY believe that teachers have a tremendous impact on our children’s lives, so we created the KBAY Teacher of the Month program with the San Jose Education Foundation to honor South Bay teachers who are making a difference by creating memorable, interactive and enhanced learning experiences for their students.

The KBAY Teacher of the Month for November is Howard Chan, who teaches 6th grade at John J. Montgomery Elementary School in San Jose. Howard will receive a $500 Innovation Grant for his classroom from the San Jose Education Foundation.

“The thing I enjoy most about teaching is building relationships with the children. I have learned that my class flourishes best when I build solid relationships with my students. When I build a family atmosphere, the students are more engaged and willing to listen to my ideas”

Howard Chan is a third year teacher who previously worked for five years as an engineer with various high tech firms in Silicon Valley. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering and is working on his Masters Degree in Cross-Cultural Education.

Howard will use his SJEF Teacher Innovation Grant to integrate art, music and dance into the curriculum using the Hip Hop 360 program. This program is based on the “multiple intelligences” concept which stresses that all of a student’s talents must be involved in the education process. The grant will be used to purchase necessary equipment and materials to implement the project. “As far as teaching my students to learn, the grant will give me more opportunities to differentiate my curriculum. It is important to touch on the various multiple intelligences of our students. My program will give the students the chance to practice it.”

John J. Montgomery is a school with many low income students from ethnically diverse backgrounds. “The biggest challenge is to teach Title I (low income) students with the limited financial resources that are available. With the growing requirements from our state standards, the pressure to excel is demanding. However, the more pressure we are given to succeed, it seems the fewer resources have become available for us.” This SJEF grant will help provide some of those resources.
