Steve says robotics is a big part of our lives today, from conventional assembly lines to adventurous areas like medicine, research, nano-technology – and it’s a bigger part of our future. Steve’s using his San Jose Education Foundation Innovation Grant of $500 to create several new robots to inspire his young students. Mr. Novotny says the best thing about being a teacher is seeing that “light” go on in a kids’ eyes when he or she gets turned on to something they’re learning, and the next best thing is when they come back for a visit years later to say “Thanks!” for helping them in ways that have improved their lives forever. Steve’s class is the first to receive IMAX passes from the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation, along with field trip passes to “The Tech”. The KBAY / San Jose Education Foundation Teacher of the Month for March is Steve Novotny, who keeps his students excited about learning, and turned on to technology through his robotics classes. Steve teaches conventional classes like computer science at San Jose High Academy, but he says robotics helps him bridge the gap between the really fast-learners, and the students who need more attention. Robotics is an extra feature of being in Mr. Novotny’s class, and kids perform community service at the school – things like locker and bench repairs – for the privilege of participating in Steve’s passion.
