TeachersKBAY Teacher of the MonthNominate teacher for KBAY’s Teacher of the Month Click here to see who was named KBAY’s Teacher of the Month in prior months The KBAY Teacher of the Month for June is Harriette Quilicot, who teaches 3rd grade at Toyon Elementary School in the Berryessa Union School District. Harriette has taught in Berryessa for three years. Harriette is a graduate of UC Davis and attended Orchard Elementary School and Independence High School in San Jose. Harriette will receive a Teacher Innovation Grant for her classes from the Silicon Valley Education Foundation.
When asked what she liked most about being a teacher, Harriette replied, “The kids…even on a bad day, they always make me laugh.” Harriette’s students are 75% English Language Learners and her class contains seven different ethnicities. Toyon is the oldest in the Berryessa district.
Harriette used her SVEF grant to take her students on a marshlands study trip to the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. She says, “The SVEF Innovation Grant gave our students a chance to experience local marshlands first-hand. They explored all aspects of the site and got a chance to see (and in some instances touch and taste) many of the organisms we have learned about in the classroom. Toyon students were able to see and experience things that may only have been accessible through textbooks, if we were unable to take the trip. I think the visit to the refuge has helped to make our students’ learning more meaningful. It’s no longer just something they’ve read about in school; it’s a place they have visited and studied. They now have a personal experience that they will always remember.” Harriette says that the biggest challenges she faces every day in teaching is, “trying to meet each individual student’s needs. I do my best to differentiate instruction. I try to work with smaller groups throughout the day, so I can help those kids that need extra help, and I try to give more challenging assignments to those kids that need more of a challenge. I also do a lot of pair and group work, which give students a chance to help each other. Having a teacher’s aide in the classroom would be ideal. ”Congratulations to Harriett Quilicot, KBAY’s Teacher of the Month for June. |
