February Teacher of the Month

The KBAY Teacher of the Month program is a partnership between 94.5 KBAY FM and the San Jose Education Foundation, the leading education foundation serving students, families and teachers of San Jose.

K.BAY Teacher of the Month
Like you, we at KBAY believe that teachers have a tremendous impact on our children’s lives, so we created the KBAY Teacher of the Month program with the San Jose Education Foundation to honor South Bay teachers who are making a difference by creating memorable, interactive and enhanced learning experiences for their students.

The KBAY Teacher of the Month for February is Joyce Singh, who teaches Kindergarten at Northwood Elementary School in San Jose. Joyce will receive a $500 Innovation Grant for her classroom from the San Jose Education Foundation.

“What I like most about being a teacher is that I can be around people who work to do what is best for the students we teach.  I enjoy watching students learn and get a joy from that.  It is almost like magic to see what was unknown to them become known and able to be applied. I love the teaching-learning process.  It is just fun to teach. I like finding and getting new materials and trying it out with my students to improve their learning.”

Joyce Singh has taught forK.BAY Teacher of the Month over forty years at in kindergarten and first/second grades. She has bachelors and masters degrees from San Jose State and has received grants previously from the Whitney Foundation and Hewlett-Packard. She was the Berryessa District Teacher of the Year in 2004.

Joyce’s project involves the use of taped lessons which will allow parents and students to work together to reinforce what is taught in school.  “This grant has focused my thoughts on how simple technology can be an effective tool to save teacher time and help students. By duplicating lessons and teacher directions, this can help students meet classroom expectations.”

“The biggest challenge I face in my classroom everyday is how best to get the students to learn and to find the most efficient method to get them to accomplish tasks that seem to be out of their reach. I deal with this challenge by always looking for new methods that are out in the market place, going to conferences, reading research about it or conferring with other teachers. I have found that there exists some marvelous materials/equipment to enhance learning.  Some I have purchased and others are yet to be discovered.

Congratulations to Joyce Singh, KBAY’s February Teacher of the Month.
