Pamela Anderson-BruléThe KBAY Teacher of the Month is Nicole Huguenin, who teaches World History, Psychology and Sociology at Branham High School in the Campbell Union High School District. Nicole is also the JV Softball coach and Red Cross Club advisor. Andrea will receive a Teacher Innovation Grant for her class from the San José Education Foundation.

“Teaching is what I am meant to do at this stage in my life. It enthralls me to witness an adolescent recognizing that they have power over their learning. Helping lead students to this enlightenment is like opening a door to a grand treasure.

K.BAY Teacher of the Month

It excites me even further to engage students in a conversation about their own passions and abilities and how they can share those with the rest of the world. Teaching history and psychology are subjects that allow me to engage students in meaningful learning experiences that connect to the realities of their world.”

Nicole will use her SJEF grant to allow her students to conduct real psychological research and then present their projects at a Psychology Science Fair. “The San José Education Foundation Innovation Grant will provide a wonderful opportunity for each student to design, implement and analyze a psychological topic, such as sleep deprivation and academic achievement or music’s influence on adolescent behavior, and other topics of interest to them.”

Branham High School is located on the west side of San Jose and has an enrollment of around 1500 students in ninth through twelfth grades.

“Branham High School is a dynamic place to teach. Students and teachers are both active participants in their teaching and learning. We are a proactive school that works towards preparing students for college & engaging students as active contributors to their communities.”

Nicole says that the biggest challenge in teaching is TIME! “Being a club advisor, softball coach, and teacher trainer in addition to teaching World History Honors and the new courses of Psychology and Sociology leaves me little time to do all of these things to the best of my ability. I am constantly struggling to balance my responsibilities as a teacher and mentor. As I tell all my students, prioritizing and setting daily goals are the only ways to effectively manage time and feel good about what I personally do.

Congratulations to Nicole Huguenin, KBAY’s Teacher of the Month for December.
